Can I have my eyes tested at home?

Yes. You can have your eyes tested in your home if you cannot go out to an optician unaccompanied because of poor physical or mental health. We can examine you in your own house, or your residential/care home or at your day centre.

Will the test be free?

Your test will be free if you are:

  • Over 60 years old.
  • Under 16, or under 19 in full time education.
  • You are diabetic, have glaucoma, or are registered blind or partially sighted.
  • If you are over 40, and a first order relative has glaucoma.
  • If an eye doctor thinks you are at risk of glaucoma.
  • You are due a complex lens voucher - we will advise you on this.
  • You are on income support or pension credit gaurantee credit.

Will my glasses be free?

You may get help towards the cost of your spectacles if you are:

  • aged under 16
  • aged 16, 17 or 18 and are in full-time education
  • eligible for an NHS complex lens voucher – we will advise you about your entitlement
  • a prisoner on leave from prison

You may also get an NHS optical voucher if you:

  • receive Income Support
  • receive Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (not Contribution-based)
  • receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • receive Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (not Contribution-based)
  • are entitled to, or named on, a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate
  • are named on a valid NHS Certificate for full help with health costs (HC2)

If you are named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3), you may also get help towards the cost of your glasses.

If you qualify for an NHS optical voucher, you can use it to pay for your glasses. We have a range of frames and lenses whose costs can be totally covered by the voucher value, making your spectacles free of charge. You can also use the voucher towards special lenses if you wish. The team will advise you regarding your options on the day of the test.
